A Statement from Director Sandra Hochman

Bette Davis said, “Old age ain’t no place for sissies.” But I’m finding old age a lot of fun.

I am Sandra Hochman, a novelist, poet, playwright, and, at the age of 81, I am having a renaissance of interest in my works, including my film Year of the Woman, a documentary from 1972 on the women’s movement filmed at the Democratic Convention, and filmed with an all-woman crew. It includes great stars, politicians, and activists such as Gloria Steinem, Nora Ephron, Art Buchwald, Coretta Scott King, Bella Abzug, Germaine Greer, Warren Beatty, George McGovern and many more. Year of the Woman was hidden in a vault for 46 years, and has been rediscovered and is now screening all over the world, showing in Paris, in London, and recently in New York City at Lincoln Center courtesy of the enthusiastic Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post, who claims this is one of the most important documentaries ever made. In the film, I suggest that men should go to rehabilitation centers, and now in the era of Harvey Weinstein, the absurdist ideas of the future I predicted when I was young are all coming true. Having the good fortune of making Year of the Woman, it’s a joy to see that my old age is filled with new audiences. Year of the Woman will be screened this April 21st & 23rd at the Film Forum in NYC.
