UNE CHAMBRE EN VILLE

(1982) Clad only in her fur coat, Dominique Sanda’s left impotent husband Michel Piccoli, while mother Baroness Danielle Darrieux is left holding the bag when her boarder, steelworker Richard Berry, leaves the apartment for the strike-ridden streets of Nantes — even as Berry’s semi-girlfriend Fabienne Guyon waits to give him some special news. But when Sanda and Berry meet by chance… Demy’s second all-sung musical is a polar opposite of his Umbrellas of Cherbourg (playing Oct 18-24), really a tragic opera acted and sung against a background of street scenes of labor unrest. Approx. 90 min. DCP. Restored in 2013 with support of L’Institut Lumière and the CNC.

REVIEWS

"A somber counterpoint to his earlier, jollier song-and-dance productions… Une Chambre En Ville is more Greek tragedy than playful fairy tale. Comparisons to West Side Story are expected, but Demy's chamber piece is more pointed."
– John Oursler, Village Voice

“Michel Colombier’s score and Bernard Evein’s chromatically controlled production design define the action throughout, including a color-coordinated labor riot.”
– Juliet Clark
