(1960, Stanley Kubrick)  Slave Kirk Douglas, drafted for the gladiator arena, decides, once he’s got a sword in hand, that it’s time for the oppressed to take on the Roman Empire. Taking over from the fired Anthony Mann, Kubrick served as ringmaster for the incredible all-star cast including Laurence Olivier, Tony Curtis, Charles Laughton, and Peter Ustinov. This 1991 restoration puts back some previously-excised footage, including the notorious bathing sequence. Approx. 184 min. 35mm.

“This may be the best-paced and most slyly entertaining of all the decadent-ancient-Rome spectacular films. It’s a great big cartoon drama.”
– Pauline Kael
