(1923, von Stroheim & Rupert Julian) In pre-War Vienna, wastrel count Norman Kerry (a role intended for Von himself) shrugs off his engagement to a groom-loving Kontesse, as he finds a love that surprises him with Prater ticket-taker Mary Philbin (Chaney’s Phantom terroree). The battles over Foolish Wives continued with producer Irving Thalberg, who fired Von with one-third the picture in the can – replaced by later Phantom director Julian.
