Grover Crisp, Sony Pictures Entertainment executive vice-president of asset management, film restoration, and digital mastering, will introduce Dr. Strangelove on Friday (4:00 & 7:00) and Saturday (5:30) with excerpts from the film, alternating between a 35mm print and Sony’s 4K DCP restoration. A Q&A will follow the demonstration.
(1964, Stanley Kubrick) “Mein führer, I can walk!” When General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) unleashes an H-Bomb attack on the Russkies, General “Buck” Turgidson (George C. Scott), Colonel “Bat” Guano (Keenan Wynn), Major T.J. “King” Kong (Slim Pickens), Group Captain Lionel Mandrake and President Merkin Muffly (both Peter Sellers) vie to foment/stave off Doomsday, with eponymous Strangeliebe (still Sellers) lurking in the wings.
"Remarkably fresh and undated – a clear-eyed, irreverent, dangerous satire. And its willingness to follow the situation to its logical conclusion has a purity that today's lily-livered happy-ending technicians would probably find a way around. Its black and white photography helps, too, putting an unadorned face on its deadly political paradoxes. If movies of this irreverence, intelligence and savagery were still being made, the world would seem a younger place."
– Roger Ebert
"Perhaps Kubrick's most perfectly realised film... The result is scary, hilarious, and nightmarishly beautiful, far more effective in its portrait of insanity and call for disarmament than any number of worthy anti-nuke documentaries."
– Geoff Andrew, Time Out (London)
"A deadly black satirical comedy-thriller... The manic, cartoonish performances of George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, and Peter Sellers (in three separate roles, including the title part) look as brilliant as ever."
– Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader
