What makes Film Forum Click here for some reasons. |

"There are two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots. Film Forum remains true to its roots. We have been an independent movie house since 1970 – an idealistic outgrowth of underground movies. It was a time when few people had heard of independent cinema or considered documentaries theatrically viable. We premiered the early films of Stan Brakhage, R.W. Fassbinder, Werner Herzog, Fred Wiseman – and in 1987, Karen Cooper teamed up with Bruce Goldstein who began developing far-reaching retrospectives of some of the world‘s master cineastes, from Kurosawa to Billy Wilder. And we‘ve spread our wings – in the form of unique events and improvements to our theater. In the past two years alone FF has brought these acclaimed artists to meet our audience: Budd Shulberg, Patricia Neal, Jane Powell, Carmen De Lavallade and Geoffrey Holder, Farley Granger, Tony Curtis, D.A. Pennebaker, Sidney Lumet, Chuck Close, Kiki Smith, Danny Glover, Tony Kushner, Rip Torn, Marge Champion, Sam Shepard and William Eggleston. In 2007 we enhanced your cinematic experience by installing all-new theater seating and adding state-of-the-art HD video projection. Technology is changing quickly and additional upgrades are planned for 2008. None of this would be possible without the support of our audience: people who are committed to the quality and diversity of our unique programming. As a nonprofit cinema we are able to present films based on their artistic merit, regardless of their potential for box office success. Your contributions allow us to show films that challenge, inspire and entertain. Each year we must raise $1.4 million to survive. If you give $250 you may select a DVD from among some of our most popular titles; with a $500 gift or more, select two. For details, please click here. Thank you. We look forward to seeing you at the movies.
