BRITISH PHOTOJOURNALIST ZANA BRISKI INTENDED TO
RECORD THE LIVES OF CALCUTTA’S PROSTITUTES, but
soon found that it was the children of the Sonagachi red
light district — even lower on society’s pecking order —
who were more accessible to her. Briski gains their trust
by teaching a photography workshop — complete with
portfolio evaluation and end-of-semester gallery show —
the kind of after-school activity you’d expect to find on
Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Making art is a lot more
constructive than hanging around the benighted
honeycomb of tenements these children call home. Can
this encounter with outsiders from another culture
change the trajectory of their lives? Winner of the
Audience Award at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
