LET IT COME DOWN

The Life of Paul Bowles

Directed by Jennifer Baichwal

Canada, 1998
73 Mins.
Zeitgeist Films

One of the most enigmatic artists of the 20th century, writer-composer Paul Bowles, now in his 88th year, is profiled by a filmmaker who has been obsessed with his genius since age 19. Candid interviews with Bowles in his Tangiers home touch upon his relationships with Gertrude Stein, Tennessee Williams, Ned Rorem, Truman Capote, Jack Kerouac, and wife Jane Bowles. Longtime friends Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs are recorded in a final rendezvous with Bowles in New York in 1995 for the Lincoln Center presentation of his music by the Eos Orchestra. "He's complex and wily and full of subterfuge" says Ms. Baichwal. Her film brings us as close to him as we are likely to ever get.
