"Marc Singer's powerful documentary (is) set in an underground community of the homeless living beneath Manhattan in one of Amtrak's tunnels. Mr. Singer (is) a first-time filmmaker - he learned to work his camera just before descending into the underground to live with and film his subjects, who also served as his crew... His documentary, which uses the canny pulse of D.J. Shadow's music, was filmed in black and white, which deepens the bleakness. Mr. Singer's gift for photography is undeniable; he could make a living as a shooter and shared a cinematography award. His directing instincts are also immaculate. DARK DAYS doesn't lapse into cheap sentimentality. His subjects are rueful, funny and gifted storytellers. By surviving in the roughest of circumstances, they have become toughened raconteurs uninterested in pitying themselves. The movie is as tough as its milieu." - Elvis Mitchell, writing on the Sundance Film Festival, The New York Times.
